LASIK Consultation Q & A

What is LASIK?

LASIK, or laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis, is an advanced type of laser eye surgery in which your eye surgeon shapes your cornea to correct vision problems. Most LASIK patients can quit wearing glasses or contact lenses after their procedure, and that's what makes LASIK such an attractive option for millions of men and women today.

Am I a good candidate for LASIK?

Dr. Ethezaz performs an eye exam to assess your vision issue in detail, and she also discusses your needs and goals with you to determine whether LASIK is right for you.

LASIK corrects myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. With all of these refractive errors, your cornea shape is oval or otherwise irregular rather than being round.

During LASIK, your eye surgeon reshapes the cornea, which allows you to focus light more effectively so you can see better without glasses or contacts. If you have healthy eyes and suffer from one of these refractive errors, LASIK could be a great choice for you.

LASIK doesn’t correct hyperopia, age-related eye focus issues. Having hyperopia doesn’t exclude you from LASIK eligibility. But, patients over 40 generally need to use reading glasses for near vision like reading or computer use after LASIK.

If you have serious refractive errors, like extremely severe myopia, LASIK might not be right for you. Other possible problems that could exclude you from LASIK eligibility can include corneal scarring, glaucoma, and cataracts. But, certain problems, like thin corneas, might not exclude you from all eye surgery. Another type of surgery, like photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), may be an option if LASIK won’t work for you.

If you’re a good candidate for LASIK, Dr. Ethezaz discusses all the different aspects of the surgery with you to help you decide whether you’re ready to schedule your surgery.

Who performs the surgery after my LASIK consultation?

Dr. Ethezaz refers you to a local ophthalmologist, a medical doctor who specializes in eye surgery. You’ll return to Lincoln Square Eyecare for your post-surgery appointment, which usually occurs the day after your LASIK surgery.
